The Moonman has landed. In Brooklyn, that is.
The 30th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Aug. 25, the network announced today.
The VMAs will be the first major annual awards show to find a home in the borough.
The birthplace of Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z, and the borough credited with helping launch the careers of some of 2013’s biggest names in music — including the Lumineers and Fun. — it’s only fitting that the Moonman made the move to Brooklyn. At least according to Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
“From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay- Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the ‘spotlight’ on MTV,” Markowitz said. “Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca — the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country…”
The network chronicled the move today by releasing eight photos via its Twitter and Instagram accounts of the iconic symbol of the MTV Video Music Awards. The Moonman made the journey from Los Angeles early this morning, touching down at JFK International Airport at noon. About 1:30 p.m., the journey ended when the Moonman landed at the Barclays Center.
The last time the VMAs were held in New York was four years ago, when the show was taped at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan.
