Lost In Dubai: I’m a Tutor
I had my first student today teaching ESL. She is a lovely 27-year-old woman from Syria who has two beautiful children. When I arrived at her home she greeted me with orange juice in a wine glass and a huge smile. Her darling 2-year-old daughter ran through the house while her son cried for attention. I know it sounds very loud but it was like music. She got her son and he immediately stopped crying.
We then started our English lesson. As I began to teach for a split second I flashed back to a my second grade teacher who advised me my brain was a waste. She discouraged me at such a young age but look at how I overcame that and proved her wrong. My student looked at me as one who is knowledgeable and worthy to explain. What a feeling! I’ve bottled that emotion and I will carry it until my life’s end.
As I taught her she began to understand. She was even making sentences with English words. Then I realized I am changing her life. I am helping her in a way she will use forever being that she is moving to Canada. This student of mine is very warm and friendly which has not been the theme since I have arrived. She was truly a breath of fresh air. I am excited and honored to be the one to teach her English.
So this is the way I am keeping myself busy while I am here. It is hard to be in the home while your partner travels all the time. Before I started I was like oh this is a quick way to make money so I can do that to pass time but after my first session I feel different. I feel like it is much more than that. I appreciate moments of clarity.
That’s all for now..I love y’all and thanks for being here with me
xoxo
