Pharrell Williams Ordered to Pay 7 Mil for Blurred Lines!
The Blurred Lines Verdict is in! Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke, and TI have been order to pay 7.3 million dollars to the Marvin Gaye estate.
The Gaye family accused Robin Thicke last year of sampling Marvin’s hit Got to Give it Up. Thicke and Williams made a case saying the song was made from their own creative influences and wasn’t a direct sample from Marvin Gaye.
Then further down the line Robin Thicke admitted that Pharrell wrote and produced the whole song because he was on drugs and alcohol. After a year of depositions and mash-ups the eight person jury announced a verdict.
After the verdict was revealed Robin Thicke and Williams lawyers released this statement to Rolling Stone:
While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward,” Williams, Thicke and T.I. said in a joint statement. “‘Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.
The Gaye family is now in the process of trying to stop the song from being sold until an agreement that includes them is made. Do you think Blurred Lines sounds similar to Got to Give it Up? Listen to the mash-up below.
