Single Ladies More Like Desperate Ladies!

New romantic comedy hits VH1 called Single Ladies starring Lisa Raye Mcoy (Keisha) , Stacey Dash (Val), and Charity Shea (April).  This series kicked off with a mini movie which then led into the actual series. The movie showed Dash’s (Val) character who was dating a basketball player for five years just to find out the relationship was on a stand still. Mcoy’s (Keshia) character is portrayed as ex video vixen who dates men for specific reasons whether it be money or sex. Shea’s (April) character got married young to a loyal husband but is currently having an affair with the mayor played by hip-hop artist Common.

After watching the movie and the first episode I can honestly say this maybe the worst display of women behavior in relationships. For example in the movie Val gets dumped by her baller boyfriend due to her wanting marriage. Then she finds out that he is engaged to someone else. After receiving this news Val decides to confront her ex wearing a sexy dress at her apartment.  Val’s ex tells her that he was “settling” for her and that he was never in love with her. Val retaliates with the typical female empowerment speech (I got my own house, job, money in the bank…blah…blah…blah…im good without you) only to be left alone crying.  While crying Val’s ex comes back in the apartment and she has sex with him.

I was so disgusted. How could they even write a character so powerless? On what planet does a woman being told you are what I settle for and I was never in love with you become code for I would love to fuck you on my living room table? While some women who watched it and celebrated with a champagne toast don’t even realize she was being played. Some women would assume that five years meant something in that moment..NEWS FLASH it doesn’t. He only had sex with her because she came to the door looking like sex not because he realize what he lost. If a man knows he lost something he knows how to pursue to get it back. In this aspect Val completely played herself.

Keisha’s character is interesting because the writers tried to parallel her to Samantha from Sex and the City. I didn’t see any of Samantha traits manifest at all. Samantha had lavish casual sex with the business heavy hitters of New York. Meanwhile Keisha is donating her vagina to the needy of Atlanta. Keisha was having casual sex with a man who had no money to get home. He then explained to Keisha is lack of funds and then she gave him the money to get home. She made his cash poor behavior acceptable by saying “you better be glad you have this (penis reference).” In what world does a professional woman who has her own place give a man cab fair after she has gave up the goods? Keisha character receives the lame award. There is nothing balling about dick you have to sponsor.

Last but not least April’s character has really no depth. She is married to a super corn ball black man who she decided to cheat on with Common. To be honest her husband was way to nice and he seemed very boring. The writing for this character wasn’t that bad just the acting. By the way why are these women over a certain age in the show and are still roommates? Why wouldn’t the writers have them in their own apartments in Atlanta. Georgia is not that expensive. I think if your in your late 30′s you are really past the roomies stage.

I can conclude this after watching “Single Ladies” it has horrible acting, a non realistic plot, and poor representation of single women. I remember being single and I was never an idiot for a dude I wasn’t committed too. I hope after a few shows it starts to pick up because if it doesn’t the cast won’t have to worry about being single just employed.
