The Gossip Game: My Open Letter I am Disappointed
The newest reality show to hit Vh1 “The Gossip Game” featuring Morning show heavy hitters Angela Yee and K. Foxx is less than stellar. I should have known what to expect from Mona Scott who is the new queen of dysfunctional reality television. I’m not going to lie I had some expectations for this show because these are young women of color in prestigious positions in the media industry.
I was expecting to see a small bit of cattiness but certainly not a shouting match at an industry party among the who’s who of the hip hop journalism community. I thought it was going convey how hard it is for a woman in a male dominated field. I thought it would be a teaching tool for our young girls to see what is really out there. Thanks Mona for proving me wrong yet again. I was hoping this would be your redemption show silly me for thinking you would want that for our women.
I feel like women in these positions have a responsibility to young girls who aspire to be just like them. The show opened with K.Foxx being interview by fellow cast mate Jas Fly about their rival station Power 105.1. K. Foxx was then ambushed because Jas Fly invited Angela Yee to be interviewed at the same time. Although both ladies sat there and exchanged fake hellos and answered some of the hard questions about their stations I couldn’t believe their distain for each other. How can these women not just respect each other for the position they hold despite their home station?
When I looked at this I was so angry because this is exactly the reason why when women get assertive in the work place we are looked at as being emotional verses men. It is hard enough being a woman as is then adding a woman of color in an industry where women are constantly objectified you need to be on your “A” game at all times. I am not saying K.Foxx and Angela Yee need to have a slumber party and braid each others hair but they could at least respect the grind. Jas Fly achieved her goal in getting an successful interview but I was disgusted.
Once the interview was over K.Foxx went back to her station and told Flex what Angela Yee said about him during the interview. Yee advised Fly that Flex should respectfully leave Hot 97 before they let him go. There DJ’s have been there forever. Despite who is number 1 at the moment they better hope that Power can stand the test of time Hot has. For Flex to even have a job at the same station for almost 20 years is not only a coo but an accomplishment in his career as DJ. So as much as both stations go back and fourth Power needs to respect their longevity and strive for that same existence in their future.
They’re other cast members such as bloggers Ms. Drama and Nyc Girl aka Viv. Viv is also related to infamous shock jock “Star” of Star and Buckwild. He made a cameo on the show displaying his arrogant personality and womanising persona. I still say he had the best morning show in New York till this day. Everyday was very entertaining. I miss him on mainstream radio.
However, Sharon Carpenter made her opinion known early about bloggers. She basically doesn’t respect them. Carpenter was the correspondent on BET nightly news and now a journalist for Global Grind Russell Simmons “blogging” site. Moving along in the show Angela Yee invites Viv to a industry mixer to try to help her promote her blog that Yee follows personally.
Viv reluctantly agrees due to Ms.Drama invitation stating she was speaking ill of her. Ms. Drama is seen saying Viv’s blogging style is ratchet to Jas Fly. So they finally meet at this networking event and these two act out the most horrible display of professionalism I have ever seen. They start yelling and screaming in front of the editor-in-chief of Source Online Kim Osorio.
I just don’t understand the goal of these shows. It portrays women of color even in positions of power acting like circus animals. I can’t blame Mona Scott because I know she is just trying to do her job but at the same time she is selling us out. I thought this show would be different than Love and Hip Hop. Basically it is Love and Hip Hop with women of influence.
One last thought before I get off my soap box when will there be a reality show that shows women of color in power being positive with one another? When will they film positive imagery for our little girls to be inspired by? When will Mona Scott or Shaunie O’Neal make a show that they can be proud of outside of the bank? If I had my way I would make a show showing the women movers and shakers in the community that display elegance, grace, and integrity.
Women whose vocabularies span further than the word “bitch”. Women’s who actions are so above shouting in a room full of their work peers. I would have a show where women would walk with their heads high and would congratulate one another for their contributions to their craft. They would lift each other up and be glad we are demanding respect from men.
If I had my way my reality show would be cancelled because people want us fighting, cursing, scheming, and putting each other down. People thrive on the catty, bitchy, disrespectful women. I am praying right now for our little girls because this imagery will influence their next move. I was going to ask how does Scott sleep at night but I’m sure it is on Egyptian cotton, I hope it’s worth it.
I can’t anymore…
