Two Women and A Moroccan Bath
Dubai’s beauty industry is in demand and it comes at very low prices. You can find plenty of salons that will have promotions on several services for under 30 dollars.
When I was in America I use to pay almost a 100 dollars every two weeks for nails, eyebrows, and spa pedicures. Knowing what I use to pay fuelled me to advantage of these offers. Now that my friend Jamilla is in town from New York I couldn’t think of a better thing for us to do.
What girl doesn’t like to be pampered?
We got dressed and headed to the salon in a cab. We arrived at the salon and saw a huge sign for a promotion for seven services for 100 AED (27.00 USD). We were both instantly excited.
As we scrolled the services mentally the Moroccan Bath was something I’d never done. I turned to Jamilla and said we should do this. Jamilla agreed as we walked into the salon. The salon appeared clean with several workers. No one was posted at reception to greet us so we sat in the waiting area.
Then a small indian woman appeared and began to speak what I call Arabish (Arabic mixed with muddled English words). She then asked us what services we needed.
After 15 minutes of being involved in a language barrier she finally understood what we wanted. We took a seat again and proceeded to wait. Jamilla and I made small talk until one of the beautician called me forward.
She signalled for me to follow her into this room where they do the Moroccan Bath. As I walked into the room it was very dim and very wet. Then in the corner of the room was a hazed window and an off white massage table. All I was thinking as my fear of germs kicked in I hope that was its original color.
Before we got started the woman revealed to me that the loofah she had wasn’t good. When I asked her why she told me because it was used on all the customers. Basically this loofah was full or germs and worn. I ran out of the room screaming to Jamilla. “EVERY WOMAN IN UAE HAS HAD THAT LOOFAH ON THEIR BODY!” “NO I WILL NOT!” “YUCK!”
Jamilla in a calm voice replied to the worker “That is very unsanitary and I decline.” Meanwhile I am still in my feelings about that woman trying to use some nasty loofah on me. The beautician said for 25 dirham we can buy another one and share it. Jamilla and I declined again.
Then she said she could do a body scrub in the steam room where she just uses her hands. We then accepted. She guided us to a room to undress, gave us towels, and then took us into the steam room.
As I got undressed I realized I wasn’t wearing any underwear. In my mind underwear wear created for periods and hiding flab.
I wasn’t dealing with either one so I didn’t even think to wear any. As I wrapped my towel around my half-naked body I was sure this would be interesting. Jamilla and I sat in the steam room waiting for the woman to return.
When she walked in she called Jamilla to go first. She pulled out some body scrub and went to work on Jamilla. As she scrubbed, Jamilla held onto her body in fear. The beautician said to her “Madam, please put your arms down.” I continued to laugh at Jamilla’s clear lack of control in the situation.
“I don’t like being naked around my own mom!” Jamilla exclaimed. However, she was wearing a bra and panties. So she wasn’t really naked at all.
The woman finished the scrub and it was my turn. I removed my towel to show my lack of underwear. Jamilla screamed “Oh my God! Jersey Is Naked!” I laughed so loudly because I knew that was coming.
Wearing my top and missing the bottoms I began my scrub. The scrub didn’t have much of a smell but I could feel with her force as she rubbed. I knew whatever dead skin I had it was being removed. She scrubbed for about 10 minutes and then she left us to steam.
Jamilla and I had girl talk as the steam arose. As the time passed on it was becoming harder to see. The room became increasingly hot and the moisture began to pour down our faces.
All of sudden the steam started to come out of the wall aggressively. At this point we both took shifts opening the door to let the steam mix with the air. Due to the extreme steam; it was becoming harder to breathe.
The positive part of the harsh steam was the calories we burned. Who can’t afford to burn a few more of those?
Also I am sure it was doing wonders for our natural hair. After 30 minutes passed the woman came in to wash us off. My skin after had a glow and it was very soft.
We got dressed then continued with mani’s and pedi’s. The day of pampering started off a little crazy but alls well ends well. I didn’t get to have the Moroccan Bath but I will. Have you ever had one? Let’s talk about it and leave your comments down below.
